2. Frequently Asked Questions
2.1 Where is my data stored?
Everything you enter — names, relationships, photos, dates — is stored only on your device, in the App's local database. There is no account, no sign-in, and no cloud storage. Silsilah has no server of any kind, so nobody but you can see your family tree.
2.2 How do I back up my tree or move it to another device?
Because your data lives only on your device, back it up the same way you back up the rest of your device — for example through your phone or computer's regular backup system (such as iCloud or Time Machine on Apple devices). Reinstalling the App from a device backup restores your tree along with it. We don't yet offer a manual export/import feature, but it's on our list.
2.3 What does "Import from Contacts" do? Are my contacts uploaded anywhere?
No — your contacts are never uploaded, and this is true no matter what. "Import from Contacts" lets you pick one person from your device's contact list to save typing when adding a relative. It reads only that single contact, copies a few fields (like name, phone number, email, birthday, and photo) into the empty fields on the Add Relative form, and stores the result in the App's local database on your device — nowhere else. Your full contact list is never read, stored, or sent anywhere, and you can revoke Contacts access at any time in your device's system settings.
2.4 How do I restore my "Remove Limit" purchase?
"Remove Limit" is a one-time in-app purchase handled entirely by the App Store. Open the App, go to Settings, and look for a "Restore Purchases" option — this reconnects your existing purchase to a reinstalled App or a new device signed in with the same Apple ID. No account with us is needed.
2.5 How do I delete all my data?
Inside the App, go to Settings → Delete Data to erase everything stored in the App. You can also simply delete the App from your device, which removes its local database along with it. Either way, there is no copy left anywhere else, because we never had one.
2.6 What does App Lock do?
App Lock adds a layer of protection so only you can open the App. When it's turned on, the App asks your device to verify you using Face ID, Touch ID, a fingerprint, or your device passcode before showing your family tree. This authentication is handled entirely by your device's operating system — the App never sees or stores your biometric data.
2.7 Why does face matching need photo access?
The photo-matching feature helps you spot family resemblances by comparing faces across the photos already in your tree. It runs entirely on your device using Apple's Vision framework (or the equivalent on-device tools on Android), so it needs access to the relevant photos to do that comparison. No photo, face data, or biometric information ever leaves your device.
2.8 What versions does Silsilah support?
Silsilah: Family Tree requires iOS 18.2 or later, macOS 14 or later, or Android 10 or later.
3. Report a Problem
If something isn't working right, please email support@silsilah-familytree.com with as much of the following as you can:
- Your device model (e.g. iPhone 15, MacBook Air M2, Pixel 8)
- Your operating system version (e.g. iOS 18.3, macOS 15.1, Android 14)
- The App version (visible in Settings → About)
- The steps you took right before the problem happened
Because Silsilah has no analytics or crash reporting built in, this information is the only way we can find and fix the issue — so the more detail you can share, the faster we can help.
